AVIS announced its partnership at the Winter Universiade already in October 2014. ”We are glad we could play a part in such a grand project that promotes Slovakia. I think Slovakia has demonstrated its ability to host a global event of such scope“, Juraj Macik from AVIS Slovakia shares his thoughts. Latest car models were provided to international delegations by AVIS car rentals. Forty vehicles in total were transported to Štrbské Pleso, which caused considerable excitement at the local parking lots.
Tourists and passersby were showing their interest and curiosity as to which event was going to take place. The ivent itself started only a couple of days later. Readiness of the car park was a clear signal that the most significant university sport event of the year is approaching. As usual, each of the vehicles was equipped according to most strict AVIS standards. Many participants had an opportunity to try out new car models which are unavailable or not so popular in their home countries.
We received positive feedback from the organizers as well. They expressed their appreciation of the fleet provided by AVIS. Director of FISU for Winter Universiades Milan Augustín was generally pleased with the event organization. ”What was done only in six months is truly astonishing. I think we achieved excellent results from both organizational and technical points of view. I have heard only words of praise from all delegation members“, he concluded.
Typical frosty winter weather only accentuated the general impression and covered all surroundings with the so much needed snow layer. More than 30,000 visitors have seen the Opening ceremony, among them Slovak high ranking officials lead by the Slovak president Andrej Kiska. AVIS Slovakia representatives also gladly accepted the invitation to be a part of the spectacle.
Nine competition days followed the Opening ceremony. High Tatras opened their gates to thousands of visitors during these days. Visitors arrived mostly for two purposes – to cheer the contestants and experience the unique atmosphere of an open air sports event set in the beautiful surroundings of the High Tatra Mountains.
The Winter Universiade of 2015 was significant for Slovakia not only because it belonged to one of the host countries, but also because Slovak contestants secured many medals. Local star and biathlete Paulína Fialková shone the brightest, winning three medals and thus completing the female biathlon medal collection. We can only sincerely hope that Winter Universiade will once again return to Slovakia, just like it did in the past in 1987, 1999 and 2015.
